Glance at an Innocent Mind

Kotori is a very kind and caring young lady, and incredibly loyal. She’s protective of the people that she loves, and even if she doesn’t have enough belief in herself and her own abilities, she tries her hardest to be there for everyone. However, she doesn’t approach people with the desire to help due to her insecurity, instead she stays on the sidelines, feeling as if she’s pestering the people she comes into contact with. This is also due to her consideration for other people and their space, as well as her level of politeness.

How hard she tries to be strong for the people around her is displayed here:

"Thank you, oniichan. I will be strong. Since it is impossible for me to be of use to you, from now on, I will persevere with all my heart, so that at least I won't trouble you.”

Glimpse of a Former Life

In an attempt to protect the woman who was special to her from a horrible death, Saya married into the Togakushi Shrine.. She didn’t care whom she married, only that they were someone connected to the Shrine. The man Saya ended up marrying was Kyougo, someone who deeply loved her and did not care that she felt nothing for him.. He accepted her feelings for her best friend, Tooru, though said nothing concerning his knowledge of her emotions.

However, even if Saya did not love her husband, she bore him two children.. Children that would become apart of the destiny of the Earth, children who would lead important roles in the events fated to take place when World Ended. One, the older brother, was to become the Gemini of the boy that could decide on the outcome of the Battle between the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth, while the other, the daughter, would end up falling in the struggle. Neither child knew of their part, of course, and lived happily with their family.

Unfortunately, the younger sibling had a delicate heart, and often fell ill or collapsed when too much stress was placed upon her. For this reason her older brother, Fuuma, began protecting her from everyone that attempted to become close to her.

When Kotori, Fuuma’s sister, was in third grade, they met a young boy named ‘Kamui’ who transferred to their school. Due to his lack of knowledge of who his father was, no children would come near him or talk to him, but.. Fuuma and Kotori easily befriended him. Often, the three children would stay outside all day, playing hide and seek in the Togakushi Shrine. Whenever they returned, the trio would be reprimanded for their extended hours of fun, hours that caused their parents great worry.

One day, Kamui came to Kotori and said, “I really like Kotori-chan.” After she responded with, “I like you too, Kamui-chan,” he stated that when he was an adult, he wanted to become her bride. When she questions him about this, he responds with, “That's right. I saw on TV that It's happiest for one to marry the one he likes, becoming her 'bride'.”

Fuuma hears this, and Kamui asks him whether he minds if he becomes Kotori’s bride. Saying he’s qualified for it, Fuuma forces Kamui to promise to never hurt Kotori or make her cry, and in return for making that promise.. Fuuma swears to protect Kamui against people who attempt to harm him or who make him cry. After this vow, Kotori makes one of her own:

"Me too! I will get really angry too, if someone makes you cry, Kamui-chan! I'm not good at getting angry, but I will be mad! Really! No matter what happens, I will also protect you!”

Concerned, but pleased and touched by these pledges, Kamui asks Kotori not to overexert herself on his account. While she doesn’t give a completely binding reply, it’s enough to satisfy Kamui.

Saya, Kotori and Fuuma’s mother, died giving birth to the Divine Sword. During this incident, Kotori was laying in bed with a fever, however.. She walked in and witnessed the blood splattered on the walls as well as her head on the ground, immediately she went into shock. Fuuma, who had also seen what had happened, attempted to calm her by stating that the woman there was not their mother.

Claimed by illness from this, Kotori is unable to attend her mother’s wake or funeral. Eventually, she forgets about the gruesome sight, however.. After his mother’s death, Fuuma begins to fall victim to random blackouts.

Tooru, the woman Saya fell in love with, took her son, Kamui, and left Tokyo. Kyougo never mentioned them again.
